The 23andMe IBD Study. Let's Find a Cure!

Hey everyone. Have you guys heard of the awesome genetics website 23andme? It's a cool website that will take your DNA sample and tell you all sorts of cool things about yourself.

I did it a few years ago, and have it's been pretty cool.  I've learned how I could react to certain drugs, and what diseases I am more or less like to get.  It's very interesting.  It's a great place to find people with similar genetic makeups.
I have found plenty of 3rd, 4th, and 5th cousins. One of my favorite areas of the site is Ancestral Composition. This will let you know where your ancestors come from according to your DNA.  I really like seeing all the countries when my family has lived in the past.

As you can see below they tell you some of your elevated risk of things and decreased risk of things.

One awesome thing that they are trying to do right now with Pfizer, is to get 10,000 Crohn's Disease and Ulcerative Colitis sufferers participate in a study to answer a couple questions about our sucky disease.

From this site-
The goal of this study is to answer two main questions:
  1. Why do people get IBD? Are there genetic factors that contribute to the cause and severity of IBD?
  2. How should people be treated? Do genes influence different responses to medications or other treatment?

It's easy to participate.  Unfortunetly, you can't get in on the study if you are already a 23andMe customer, But, if not, go to the site and take the short 15 minute survey.  You will then be sent a DNA kit.  You then just spit in the tube, and send it back.  The best part, you get all the other benefits of 23andMe without having to pay the 99 bucks!

Check out the site and hopefully this will get us one step closer to a cure.
