Only 15% of Brits feel Crohn's Disease and UC are Valid Reasons to Call In
I ran across a survey that took place in the UK,
but I feel the results would be similar here. Crohn's and Colitis UK took a survey of 1,000 adults and found that most
people downplay their symptoms when calling in sick. Most fear judgement
from colleagues and feel anxious, so they report short term illness like
vomiting or flu.
I found it interesting that only 15% of
participants felt Crohn's and UC were acceptable reasons to call in sick.
I wonder if all the survey takers have full knowledge of the symptoms.
Like most I encounter, they have probably heard of it, but don't really know
about it. There are quotes from sufferers that mention downplaying
sickness as a stomach bug or something else. There are times that I been less
than specific with my Crohn's issues.
I've been lucky enough to have sympathetic and
understanding managers. Sickness and leave policies are always rigid and
suck. A great manager will often understand what's going on and help be a
great liaison between you and human resources. I've always tried to
be upfront with leadership and co-workers, mainly so people know when I'm having
a bad day. There are plenty of times I hear, "you must be in pain, I
can see it."
I certainly feel that there should be more
protections and education surrounding long term conditions like these.
How has your experience been at work? Do you downplay your symptoms, or hide
your condition?
